An excellent source of information for parents was released just recently by the National Autism Center.
You can provide your email id and download a free PDF of the A Parent's Guide to Evidence Based Practice and Autism at this website.
In our quest to find answers, there are so many different kinds of therapeutic treatment opportunities for autism. As the title states, it provides information on those methods which are backed by research practices. Besides this I particularly liked the chapters which explain the diagnostic criteria for autism and the difference between PDD NOS and Asperger’s Syndrome. Parents can use this as resource manual for other professionals who don’t know much about this condition.
Just this week one parent of a teenager with autism talked about her experiences with a doctor in her rural town. “The government doctor was supposed to identify the diagnosis and he said my son was deaf. I had to give him informational material on autism to make him understand my son’s needs!”
If you live in the US this manual gives you detailed information on how IDEA provides access to services. If you live elsewhere this is still a great resource for you and others who come in contact with your child.
